Linda's wonderful Improv Scrappy Batik quilt is just off the frame. It was such a fun quilt to work on because with each new roll I'd get to study new blocks. I'm unclear whether these are orphan blocks or ones made specifically to fit the quilt top or a mixture of both. But the end result is a marvelous color study. The purple bits are pieces of a Marimekko ombre' fabric that she purchased from the Crate 'n Barrel outlet store in Berkeley, CA. (I get to visit it in a couple weeks and hope to get something fun as well.)
It's always interesting to figure out what type of allover quilting to do on such a piece. It cries out for something different which is why Linda ultimately decided upon the Modern Maze panto by Krista Withers. It's a nice mix of straight lines, curves, spirals and bubbles. Color choice also is interesting for a quilt with a variety of prints and colors. In the end there were just two things to consider ... should the bulk of the quilt be subtle with high contrast in those purple border pieces, or should the purple border pieces be subtle and the interior of the quilt be high contrast? Since this is destined to be a wall-hanging Linda opted for the high contrast on the purple bits to entice viewers to step up closer to the quilt. It shows up especially well on the back so that will be a pleasant surprise whenever anyone flips a corner over.
Thank you Linda ... it was a pleasure adding the finishing touch to your wonderful piece of art. Now I'm wondering what you'll choose to bind it with? Have fun!
Love the modern panto, nicely done. Binding in the ombre would look great.
