I'm part of a mini modern group that's an offshoot of the Santa Clara Valley Quilt Association (SCVQA) that meets here in Sunnyvale. Last year the four of us all made blocks for a quilt that was donated to charity. We enjoyed the process so much that this year we (now up to five) chose another pattern to piece. This year's charity quilt is the River Log Cabin designed by Amy Ellis of Amy's Creative Side and was featured in the Mod Block issue of Missouri Star Quilt Company magazine. We all pieced four to five and a half blocks. The only rule was to use black as the edge strips and to use one main bright color for the interior bead strips. For the most part the fabrics all came from our stashes and scrap bags.
Once all the blocks were made we each sewed a column and another member sewed those into the flimsy. I then pieced the backing from a member's gorgeous sun fabric and some greenish-grey star fabric from the LQS's 50% area. Since these looked mostly grey I used Superior Threads So Fine 50 weight thread in color no 408, Silver. It worked really well to blend in with all the bright colors. The quilting panto is Crop Circles by Jessica Schick and the batting is Quilter's Dream Poly Deluxe.
Once the binding is sewn on we'll be donating this to a local VA home that specializes in the care of veterans with spinal cord injuries. These men (and occasional woman) are usually confined to beds so a quilt with lots of color and interest adds just a bit of cheeriness to their day.
Wonderful quilt Tami. Looks great with the scrappy blocks. Love the panto you choice and the backing is perfect.
